Cody Garbrandt rips ‘coward’ Henry Cejudo for retiring in prime, gets response on Twitter

Cody Garbrandt isn’t about to let Henry Cejudo steal his title shot.

Garbrandt (12-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC), who was originally slated to challenge flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo on Saturday at UFC 256, will have to wait his turn after a slew of health issues have forced him on the sidelines.

After successfully defending his title by submitting Alex Perez at UFC 255, Figueiredo will make a quick turnaround when he faces Brandon Moreno at UFC 256. During Thursday’s virtual media day, Figueiredo responded to Cejudo by calling him a “rents champ,” vowing to knock him out in the future. So with Figueiredo and the currently retired Cejudo seemingly angling for a fight, Cejudo poked at Garbrandt in the process, claiming that the champion is more interested in facing him.

Hey @Cody_Nolove wait in line! Looks like the #rentschamp still misses me more. Red heart @Daico_Deiveson if you can tell me in English I may consider it. But until then, go get hooked on phonics. #4everTripleC #bendtheknee

In response, Garbrandt suggested the two of them fight instead, blasting former UFC dual-champ Cejudo (16-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) for hanging up his gloves during his best form.

Why do we need to wait March 6th, I gave you the date you pick the weight. I don’t give a (expletive) about the title, if you proclaim yourself the king then don’t be a coward. Don’t run away when you are in your prime, the biggest fights lay ahead.

Cejudo:

My legacy is written and will never be broken. You are what I call a appetizer before the main course. You simply have no juice for me playboy. Stay up, keep that chin nice and strong for me.

Garbrandt:

Your legacy will be written as a coward who stepped down in his prime when his biggest fights are ahead. No king steps down in his prime there is no honor in that, the self proclaimed king is weak and sensed the declined as the divisions rise, long live the coward!!

Since announcing his retirement in May, Cejudo has constantly hinted at coming back on numerous occasions, trading barbs with UFC featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski, UFC bantamweight champ Petr Yan, and UFC flyweight champ Figueiredo and former UFC bantamweight champ Garbrandt.
