LFA champ Lupita Godinez stays ready for short-notice UFC call: ‘I know my time is coming’

Lupita Godinez wants in. She wants her shot at the UFC, and she’s ready to step in the octagon whenever necessary.

The LFA women’s strawweight champion is training and staying prepared in case the UFC comes calling in need of a short-notice replacement. Godinez (5-0) won the vacant LFA title back in October, outpointing Vanessa Demopoulos in a majority decision. The 27-year-old Mexican fighter remains undefeated in her professional MMA run.

Godinez is hoping to get a UFC call soon, and she’s ready for any opportunity that might come her way.

“Of course, 115, 125 or 135 (pounds),” Godinez told MMA Junkie in Spanish. “If you don’t risk, you don’t win – so that’s where I’m at. I’m open to whatever comes my way. Whatever UFC opportunity comes up, I’m going to take it.”

Godinez’s natural weight class is strawweight, but she’s fought before at flyweight as an amateur. She has no problem competing outside her weight class if needed, and she’s comfortable taking fights on short notice, as that’s been a recurring theme throughout her young fighting career.

“All my fights that I’ve taken have been a risk,” Godinez explained. “I’ve always taken fights with two or three weeks’ notice, sometimes even a week, so it’s a risk. Yes, I’m always training, but it’s not the same as having a complete camp.”

Godinez is waiting patently and is open to defend her LFA title if she doesn’t get a shot in the UFC in the next few months. Godinez believes her time to shine will eventually come, and she’s out to prove to people she belongs among the very best female fighters at 115 pounds.

“My time is going to come whenever it needs to come,” Godinez said. “I’m not worried about it. I know my UFC moment is coming. I’m obviously excited, and I’m waiting for the call, but I’m relaxed, and I know my time is coming.

“I feel like I’m one of the best fighters in the world. It’s just a matter of being on a big platform to showcase my skills to everyone.”
