Report: UFC Wants Poirier-McGregor 3 In May

I guess the promotion still can’t figure out what to do with the UFC lightweight division, unless it has some secret plan involving Khabib Nurmagomedov — who claims to be retired from MMA — that we don’t yet know about.

That may explain why matchmakers are leaning toward a May 2021 rubber match between former interim champion Dustin Poirier and ex-lightweight titleholder Conor McGregor, who went to war in the UFC 257 main event just last month.

Where “The Diamond” evened the score at one apiece.

ESPN reporter Ariel Helwani brought word of the tentative plans during his weekly show with UFC color commentator Daniel Cormier, helpfully passed along by the Jed I. Goodman Twitter account.

I guess all that harassment paid off.

Since it would be laughably transparent to give McGregor a title shot coming off a technical knockout loss, even as badly as Dana White and Co. want “Notorious” to be champion, Charles Oliveira would have to fight another top contender for the vacant strap.

Assuming it’s vacant and not being kept on ice for this “super fight.”

Nothing is official at this time and there are still a lot of moving parts to this situation. As of this writing, there has been no official announcement on the future of the 155-pound title and we also have to consider other variables, like this.

The next few weeks should be very interesting.
