USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings, Feb. 16: Kamaru Usman keeps climbing

Kamaru Usman’s performance during his third-round finish of Gilbert Burns in the main event of UFC 258 was so impressive, it kicked up a conversation on where he ranks among the sport’s all-time great welterweights.

That’s an open question with a long-term focus. But what’s indisputable is where Usman (18-1 MMA, 13-0 UFC) ranks in the here and now. The UFC welterweight champion won his 13th consecutive UFC fight with his finish of Burns, which broke former longtime champion Georges St-Pierre’s divisional record. It’s also his 13th win to start his UFC career, which tied Khabib Nurmagomedov for second place behind the legendary Anderson Silva’s 16.

Usman is obviously ranked No. 1 at 170 pounds in the new USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings. But what about the pound-for-pound list? He’s moving up there, too. Usman moved up to No. 4 this week, meaning the only fighters ahead of him are the retired Nurmagomedov, Jon Jones, and Israel Adesanya. That’s some rarified air.

That was the most noteworthy rankings result coming out of Saturday’s card. But if you want to check out where your favorite fighter currently places in the new USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings, click on the drop-down menu above.
