Alves Crushes Scale, Breaks ‘Rumble’ Record

UFC somethingweight Rafael Alves was scheduled to weigh in for his featherweight contest against Pat Sabatini on Friday, and not only did the Brazilian miss the 145-pound mark, he was also too heavy to compete at lightweight.

To the surprise of no one, his bout was subsequently canceled.

“Guys, I fell ill during my weight cut and my fight was cancelled,” Alves wrote on Instagram. “I’m sorry, but my health above everything.”

Alves, 30, weighed in at 157.5, a whopping 11.5 pounds over the featherweight limit when factoring in the one-pound allowance for non-title fights. That passes Anthony Johnson’s scale-crushing performance for UFC 142, when “Rumble” was slated to face Vitor Belfort.

Alves was the biggest (but not the only) miss of the day.

Three other fighters came in over the mark, including women’s bantamweight co-headliner Ketlen Vieira (138). In addition, Jared Gordon scaled at 150 pounds for his featherweight bout against Danny Chavez, while Drako Rodriguez topped out at 140.5 pounds for his bantamweight brouhaha with Aiemann Zahabi.

Not a good look.
