Khamzat Chimaev is not calling the shots.

While the ailing “Borz” may want to fight Neil Magny at some point in July, the longtime welterweight veteran — currently ranked No. 9 at 170 pounds — prefers to stay active and can’t afford to roll the dice on a potential midsummer showdown.

After all, Chimaev hasn’t been the most reliable opponent.

“I will fight him any day of the week,” Magny told MMA Fighting. “But there’s no way I’m putting my career on hold so that he could hopefully fight me come July. He needs to focus on getting healthy first. The ass-whooping he’s been asking for is long overdue, and is waiting on him.”

Magny, 33, is currently unbooked.

That said, there are no guarantees Chimaev will be ready by July. His prolonged battle with COVID-19 was so bad that “Borz” nearly retired. And despite the hype, perpetuated by UFC President Dana White, Chimaev still has a lot to prove at 170 pounds.

Making it to an actual fight would be a great start.
