Robbie Lawler feels ‘no pressure’ about UFC losing skid, itching to return

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – Former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler is keen to get back into the octagon.

Lawler (28-15 MMA, 13-9 UFC) has been out of action since last August when he lost a unanimous decision to Neil Magny. He was supposed to fight Mike Perry in November but was forced to withdraw due to injury.

Now healthy, Lawler is waiting for his next assignment. He said his team is in discussions with the UFC brass on a date and opponent, and he hopes to fight two months after signing a bout agreement.

“I feel good,” Lawler told MMA Junkie on Monday. “Life’s good, training is going good right now. … I’m waiting for a fight. Just talking to my manager Dave (Martin), and we’ll see where we can go from there.”

Lawler said he’s “not really” picky as far as opponent. His focus is on preparation, so he can get a winning result.

It’s been a tough stretch for “Ruthless,” who hasn’t had his hand raised since a unanimous decision win over Donald Cerrone in July 2017 at UFC 214. He’s dropped four consecutive bouts against Magny, Colby Covington, Ben Askren, and Rafael dos Anjos.

With high-profile names and former UFC champions such as Junior Dos Santos and more getting dropped off the roster in recently months, it wouldn’t be unfair to speculate that the 39-year-old Lawler could see his spot in jeopardy with another setback.

There’s no concern on his end about that, though. Lawler said he’s not stressing about the potential repercussions of a fifth consecutive defeat, but rather he’s just focused on making sure he’s at his best whenever the next one does come along.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time,” Lawler said. “A fight’s a fight. You do the best you can. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. There’s no such thing as pressure really. It’s just what we do. Sometimes you compete a little bit better, sometimes you don’t. But no pressure.”
