Zhang Weili: ‘I believe I can come back’ from UFC 261 title loss to Rose Namajunas

Zhang Weili wants the UFC strawweight title back.

The now-former Chinese champion would like the promotion to book a rematch with new champ Rose Namajunas following their clash in the co-main event of Saturday’s UFC 261 event in Jacksonville, Fla.
Weili (21-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) lost her 115-pound title to Namajunas (10-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC). She was knocked out with a left head kick a little over a minute into their bout.
In a statement released on Instagram, Weili called for a rematch and vowed to come back from defeat.

“I want to congratulate Rose on her victory,” Weili wrote. “She bounced back from her defeat. I believe I will also come back, only beat a great champion, to become a legend, and beat a legend, I will become a new me. Before, my goal was to win the UFC championship, but today, I have a higher goal than that. Thank you! It’s normal to lose and win. That’s the UFC. Andrade, Joanna, Rose have all lost and they all come back and try again. I have deepened my understanding of UFC today. So I believe I can come back. Hopefully the UFC will schedule a rematch soon.”

Weili was unbeaten in the UFC prior to UFC 261. The 31-year-old had won the title from Jessica Andrade in China back in August 2019 and defended it in the “2020 Fight of the Year” against former champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
