Dwight Grant thinks judges made right call in UFC 261 win: ‘I was always trying to knock him out’

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – When the judges rendered their scorecards, Dwight Grant was confident that he’d done enough to beat Stefan Sekulic.

Grant (11-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC) scored a split decision win over Sekulic at UFC 261 on Saturday, a decision that was not popular among the Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena crowd. In a closely contested battle, Grant said he was disappointed to not get the finish but felt that he landed the more significant shots.

“I’m happy that I won and that I was able to fight through everything,” Grant told reporters at the UFC 261 post-fight news conference. “But man, I promised the fans a blockbuster event, and I didn’t give them a finish. I was always right there, and I didn’t get the finish. I’m very disappointed in myself right now. I can’t even pretend. I’m just really happy that I was able to push through the whole thing.”

He continued, “I was confident about it because I saw myself knocking him against the cage and dropping him and him wobbling a couple of times so I was like it has to count for something. He was able to take me down at the very end of the first round and then he got me with a good one I think in the second or third round, a full takedown. But I was always trying to knock him out. I never stopped trying to knock this guy out through the whole fight, so I’m glad that that came through.”

With no opponent in mind for his next outing, Grant is looking for a quick turnaround in hopes to climb one step closer to the welterweight rankings.

“My goal is to get into the top of the ranks,” Grant said. “I want to get there and once I get there, believe you me, I’m gonna be calling people out to fight for sure. But right now, it doesn’t even make sense.”
