City Kickboxing fighter Fau Vake dies after being attacked in New Zealand

Fau Vake, an amateur MMA fighter out of famed City Kickboxing in New Zealand, has died as a result of injuries suffered in an alleged assault. He was 25.

Vake’s death was confirmed in a statement from City Kickboxing, according to The New Zealand Herald.

“It is with inexplicable sadness almost seven days to the hour after his hospital admission, Fau’s fight to find his way back to us ended,” the statement read. “At this tragic time, the Vake family and City Kickboxing ask for time to grieve and reflect on the loss of Fau – a father, a son and a much loved brother to us all. We will speak when the time is right to ensure Fau’s loss is not forgotten, but for now please respect our privacy.”

According to The Herald, Vake had been on life support after being critically injured in an incident last Sunday at around 3 a.m. in Auckland. His teammate and UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya was among those asking for prayers on social media throughout the week.

The Herald reports that four men are facing charges in connection with the attack on Vake. Two men are charged with common assault. A third man faces two counts of assaulting with intent to injure, and a fourth is charged with wounding with intent and injuring with intent.

Vake, who was 2-0 as an amateur, leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter.
