‘Big’ John McCarthy Got It On With A Tree And Lost

The longtime MMA fixture was doing some tree trimming when it kicked back on him, breaking 6 ribs

Pioneering MMA referee and current Bellator Fighting Championships commentator “Big” John McCarthy took to social media this afternoon to disclose that he suffered numerous internal injuries (and some cuts and bruises) while doing some yardwork earlier today, Saturday, May 29th, 2021. McCarthy posted a video of himself on the way to seek medical care.

“Well, 6 broken ribs and one punctured lung later, I have figured out that lumberjacks need way more respect!!!” read the caption.

“Well that looks good,” he said as he panned his camera phone to show off a bunch of cuts and bruises on his face. “I have fought myself. I [intelligible] bunch of broken ribs, that’s why I can hardly talk right now. ‘Cuz I had a tree attack me. I’m gonna go see how many ribs I broke. It’s a lot of fun! I would talk longer, but I have a hard time breathing. I’ll talk to you later, bye!”

Bad times! Props to even being able to do this much – I can’t imagine being able to do anything with multiple broken ribs, let alone liveblog a tree hitting me before even getting to the doctors. McCarthy would later confirm the accident in a response to a person’s guess on what happened.
