UFC Fight Night 189 video: Mason Jones’ eye poke leads to no contest with Alan Patrick

Mason Jones’ failure to control his weapons cost him a victory on Saturday at UFC Fight Night 189.

Jones’ (10-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) accidental eye poke against Alan Patrick (15-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) led to a no contest in the lightweight matchup at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, which streamed on ESPN+.

The Welshman was dominating the action and nearly put Patrick away with blows in the first round, and he was having great success in the second, too.

Jones poked Patrick in the eye during an exchange, however, and the Brazilian was unable to recover. He told the doctor he could not see after getting some time following the illegal action, and because of that it was waved off.

Referee Chris Tognoni did not deem intentional malice between Jones’ eye poke, and that’s why he ruled the fight a no contest, rather than a disqualification.

It was an unfortunate turn for Jones, who is now winless in his past two bouts after starting his career with 10 consecutive wins. Patrick, meanwhile, is now winless in his past three.
