Matt Brown: Tying UFC knockout record is great, but ‘I still got big things to do’

At 40 years old, Matt Brown has no intentions of slowing down.

Brown (23-18 MMA, 16-12 UFC) tied the UFC record for most knockouts in company history (12) when he flattened Dhiego Lima in the first round this past Saturday at UFC on ESPN 25. Brown joined Vitor Belfort and Derrick Lewis atop the list, but he isn’t fully satisfied just yet.

“I appreciate it and, yeah, those are some great company to be around there spoken with the same names as those guys,” Brown told MMA Junkie Radio. “And I think it took me longer than it should have. That’s my only thing that I don’t like about it. I think I should have had those records a long time ago, but it’s not about what you’ve done, it’s about what you’re gonna do, and that’s where my mind’s at right now.

“I don’t keep none of my belts. Obviously I don’t have a UFC belt, but the local belts that I had, trophies from different competitions and all these accolades and stuff, I don’t keep none of that around. I put in the storage, and I have no focus whatsoever on what I’ve done. I don’t care at all. I’m sure looking back in a few years whenever I’m retired, I can look back and show that to my kids. I might even brag about it a little bit or something, but I still got big things to do, bigger things than I’ve done.”

Although Brown is tied with former UFC light heavyweight champion Belfort and current heavyweight contender Derrick Lewis for the most knockouts in the promotion’s history, Brown thinks Belfort’s number comes with an asterisk due to his previous failed drug tests.

“With all due respect to Vitor, I don’t think anybody would argue that he probably had some help along the way,” Brown said. “Derrick, I mean, gosh. Heavyweights, you’re gonna have guys with a lot of knockouts.”

He continued, “I think it’s a lot tougher to do in the 170, 185, 155 range, and obviously probably it gets harder as you get lower, but yeah it’s a cool thing. It makes me feel good, but again, it’s about what I’m gonna do, not about what I’ve done.”
