GSP: ‘We’re Never Going To See’ Khabib Fight

Former two-division UFC champion Georges St-pierre is conflicted as to whether or not it’s a good thing that a super-fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov never materialized.

Georges St-Pierre and Khabib Nurmagomedov could have been the super-fight of all super-fights, but GSP is content with leaving the results to speculation.

St-Pierre (26-2), a former UFC Welterweight and UFC Middleweight champion, and Nurmagomedov (29-0), the former UFC Lightweight champion, were in discussions for a super-fight that could have served as each man’s final career outing. Unfortunately for fans it never materialized; however, GSP says that might be for the best.

“I believe if you make that fight 10 times, it could be 10 different outcomes — but we’re never going to see it, unfortunately,” St-Pierre told Bleacher Report in a recent interview. “Timing was an issue with the UFC. It’s unfortunate, but it could be seen as a positive that both of us finished our careers with a great legacy, and nothing has been tainted (by a loss)—so it’s good.”

St-Pierre has not fought since defeating Michael Bisping via third-round technical submission to capture the UFC Middleweight title at UFC 217 on Nov. 4, 2017. It extended his winning streak to 13 with successful conquests against Nick Diaz, Carlos Condit, B.J. Penn, Matt Hughes and more.

Nurmagomedov retired with a perfect 29-fight record after securing his own technical submission win over Justin Gaethje in the second round of their UFC 254 lightweight title clash on Oct. 24, 2020.
