Trash talk is one of the defining elements of the fight game. It can create narratives where they didn’t exist before, and help build up another layer of anticipation before two athletes step into the cage.

Conor McGregor has long been known as perhaps the best talker in UFC history, but after Saturday’s UFC 264 event, where he suffered a first-round TKO loss to Dustin Poirier after succumbing to a gruesome leg break, he took it to another level.

Perhaps McGregor’s (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) post-fight comments – where he threatened to kill Poirier (28-6 MMA, 20-5 UFC) and his wife, Jolie, in their sleep – does not even qualify as trash talk. But for the sake of conversation, let’s imagine it fits into that same sphere.

Did “The Notorious” go far with his post-fight words? Or even what he said prior to the trilogy bout, promising to “kill” Poirier inside the octagon.

That was a topic on this week’s episode of “Spinning Back Clique,” a roundtable discussion show. John Morgan hosted and was joined by analyst George Garcia, Nolan King and Matt Wells.

Check out the video above to see the panel discuss where the line on trash talk falls, and whether McGregor crossed it at UFC 264.
