After reinvention at Lobo Gym, free agent Alvaro Herrera eager for MMA return

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Alvaro Herrera is gearing up to make a return to MMA competition after two years away from the sport.

The former UFC fighter and TUF: Latin America 2 contestant is angling an August comeback to the cage as he looks to resume his professional career. The last time Herrera (11-7 MMA) stepped in the cage was back in March 2019 at Combate Americas 32 where he suffered a TKO loss.

“Chango” is hoping to get back to the win column and return stronger than ever.

“I know it’s been a while since I’ve fought, but I can’t wait to return,” Herrera told MMA Junkie in Spanish.

“Last year was a tough one for everyone, everything came to a stop, but I’ve continued to train and continued to reinvent myself for when the time comes for my return. I’m excited for what’s coming in my career, and I’m getting ready for it.”

The 31-year-old switched gyms following his past performance and is now training under the tutelage of Francisco Grasso at Lobo Gym. Herrera feels his game has elevated since joining Lobo Gym and can’t wait to show off his new skills.

“It’s been around a year-and-a-half that I’ve been here at Lobo, I decided to switch teams for some personal reasons, but also to make some changes in my career,” Herrera said. “Here at Lobo Gym, the truth is that they welcomed me very well, and I feel very happy here.

“I have great partners that support me in everything. We all push each other to improve, and I’ve seen a lot of improvement in my game. So now I’m just waiting for that opportunity to come. I’m happy to be part of such a great team that has many great fighters. It motivates me a lot.”

Herrera is currently a free agent and in search of a home for his fighting career. The Mexican likes the idea of competing under the Bellator banner but is open to whatever may come his way.

“I would like to fight in Bellator. I really find that promotion to be very good,” Herrera said. “Bellator is growing a lot, and I think the fighters there are very good, and I always like to fight against the best. Another promotion I really like is ONE Championship. The fights seem very intense, and it’s also a promotion that’s growing a lot. So those two are the ones that right now have my attention.”
