Matt Mitrione is no longer a Bellator MMA fighter.

“Meathead” was released by the Viacom-owned mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion following his first round loss (submission to strikes) to Tyrell Fortune last weekend (Fri., July 16, 2021) at Bellator 262, according to a report form MMA Fighting.

The loss was Mitrione’s third straight (all stoppages) and fifth setback in as many fights. The hard-hitting Heavyweight has lost four of five fights with the other being ruled a “No Contest,” bringing his record to 4-4-1 with the promotion.

Mitrione started red-hot when he first joined Bellator back in 2016 after making the jump over from Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He scored three impressive consecutive knockout wins, including a stoppage victory over the Heavyweight G.O.A.T., Fedor Emelianenko (watch it).

Now, “Meathead” is a free agent and can sign anywhere he pleases should he decide to continue his combat career. Joining Mitrione in Bellator’s latest round of cuts is Ronny Markes — who was knocked out by Said Sowma at Bellator 262 — as well as Adil Benjilany, who defeated Johnny Soto in what marked the final fight on his contract with the promotion.
