UFC 265’s Tecia Torres thinks she’s closing in on title contention: ‘I’m a few fights away’

HOUSTON – Tecia Torres believes title contention is not too far from reach.

The long-time UFC strawweight enters Saturday’s UFC 265 on a two-fight winning streak, as she takes on Angela Hill in a rematch on the pay-per-view main card of the event. Torres (11-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) feels a second win over Hill (13-9 MMA, 8-9 UFC) could put her in a favorable position for a chance to fight for title contention in her next bout.

Torres says there’s a lot riding on the Hill bout and she’s ready to make the most of it.

“I really know that I need to win this fight, then win another fight and I think if I win another top-five fight, I’ll be able to get in that title contention spot,” Torres told MMA Junkie at Wednesday’s UFC 265 media day. “I’m very aware that I’m a few fights away from being a title contender and I’m going to make that happen.”

The last time Torres and Hill crossed paths was back in 2015 at UFC 188. “The Tiny Tornado” defeated Hill, winning a unanimous decision. Both fighters have gone through ups and downs since, but today remain among some of the best at 115 pounds.

Torres knows Hill has gotten better, but she’s more focused on her own improvements since their first bout.

“I don’t care what she’s going to bring in there, I know she’s tough, but they’re all tough,” Torres explained. “I’m bringing 100 percent of me. This is going to be the best fighter of me. I’m the best version of myself and I’m in the best shape of my life.

“I’m really excited to put on a show. My last fight ended in one round and that’s awesome, but I wanted to go out there in the second round and do things that we’ve been working on.”
