Dustin Poirier, The Good Fight Foundation give away 1,000 backpacks to school children

Dustin Poirier continues to do good in his community through his charity, The Good Fight Foundation.

Poirier (28-6 MMA, 20-5 UFC), a former interim UFC lightweight champion and top-ranked contender, has spent the past several years using his platform for good, especially in his hometown of Lafayette, La.

“The Diamond” went the extra mile again over the past week when he helped give away 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to children at Lafayette Parish before they return to classrooms for the upcoming year.

There was no time wasted on Thursday, as all 1,000 bags were claimed in a less than two-hour window.

The Good Fight Foundation shared scenes from the event on social media (via Instagram):

Back to School Supply Drive was a success! 1000 backpacks in less than 2 hours. Thank you Acadiana for coming together as a community & lending a hand. We could not have done this without you!

Huge thanks to all of our donors, @servicechevroletcadillac , @donsspecialtymeats, @katctv3, and all of our volunteers who came out to help us unbox, organize & pack each backpack! You guys are amazing & we are so grateful for you all 🙏🏽

Wishing everyone a wonderful & safe school year!

The list of Poirier’s charitable acts in recent years is lengthy. His mission began around his UFC 211 fight with Eddie Alvarez in May 2017, when he opted to auction off his fight-worn gear and use the money toward a specific goal outlined by The Good Fight Foundation.

Poirier’s philanthropic efforts include building water wells to repair a ruined water supply at an orphanage and school in Uganda, building a playground for special needs children, and providing transportation and tutoring for struggling youth through The Boys & Girls Club of Acadiana.

Most recently, Poirier’s goal around his UFC 264 trilogy bout with Conor McGregor – which he won by first-round TKO – saw him team up with The Good Fight Foundation is teaming up with Justin Wren’s Fight for the Forgotten charity and boxing legend Manny Pacquiao to help build housing and other community assets across 42 acres of land for the Pygmie people in Uganda.

Poirier’s fight kit for the trilogy win over McGregor sold for a winning bid of $28,300.

Poirier’s efforts have not gone unnoticed in the MMA community. Prior to his June 2020 win over Dan Hooker at UFC on ESPN 12, Poirier was honored with the inaugural “Forrest Griffin Community Award” to acknowledge his work.
