Jay Jay Wilson announces lightweight move after third weight miss at 145 pounds
After several mishaps on the scale, Bellator featherweight contender Jay Jay Wilson will move up a weight class.
For the third time in four fights, Wilson (8-0 MMA, 7-0 BMMA) missed the featherweight mark. He came in at 150.4 pounds for his pivotal co-main event clash with Adam Borics, which was set for Friday at Bellator 265 in South Dakota. As a result, the bout was scrapped.
The unbeaten 24-year-old took to his Instagram story to issue a statement and will give in by moving up to lightweight after his biggest weight miss to date.
“I want to say a huge apology to the fans for missing weight,” Wilson said. “This was the fight people were looking forward to. I want to send a huge apology to Bellator as well. I have been struggling to make this weight for a long time and me and my team have decided to move up a weight division. The goal is the same, thank you to all the people that have my back.”
With a win over Borics, Wilson was hoping to emerge as the next title challenger for newly crowned champion A.J. McKee. But now that he’s embarking on a new chapter at 155 pounds, the road to gold just got a little longer for “The Maori Kid.”
