Amanda Nunes vs. Julianna Pena title fight gets rebooked for UFC 269 on Dec. 11
The UFC women’s bantamweight title fight between champion Amanda Nunes and Julianna Pena is back on to happen before the end of the year.
The promotion announced Monday that Nunes, also the women’s featherweight champion, will defend her 135-pound title against Pena on December 11 at UFC 269, which does not have a set location or venue.
Nunes (21-4 MMA, 14-1 UFC) and Pena (10-4 MMA, 6-2 UFC) originally were supposed to square off on Aug. 7 at UFC 265, but Nunes tested positive for COVID-19 a little more than a week out from fight night. Nunes, her wife and fellow UFC fighter Nina Nunes, and their infant daughter, Raegan, all contracted COVID-19 but have made full recoveries.
Nunes, 33, has been on a remarkable 12-fight winning streak since 2015 as she’s established herself as one of the greatest fighters of all time, having defeated a who’s who of women’s MMA competitors that inlcudes Ronda Rousey, Cris Cyborg, Holly Holm, Valentina Shevchenko twice, and more.
Pena, 32, is receiving her first title shot after alternating wins and losses in her past four fights. Pena was submitted by Shevchenko in January 2017, which snapped a four-fight winning streak, and then didn’t return to the cage until July 2019 after giving birth to her first child. Pena has since gone 2-1, with wins over former women’s flyweight champion and recently released Nicco Montano and a submission of Sara McMann in her last fight at UFC 257.
