Jorge Masvidal announces postponement of GFC 2 due to Hurricane Ida relief concerns
The second outing of Jorge Masvidal’s bareknuckle MMA promotion, Gamebred Fighting Championship, will have to wait a little longer.
GFC 2 was set to take place on Sept. 11 at the Biloxi Civic Center in Biloxi, Miss. However, in the wake of Hurricane Ida which left a path of destruction in the area, Masvidal has announced the event will be postponed, citing concerns for affected people who may need hotel rooms in the area.
On Friday evening, Masvidal posted the following statement on Instagram:
We have decided to postpone the GFC2 event. If we keep the show on 9/11 we will be taking a lot of hotel rooms that can be used for the people of Mississippi and Louisiana who have been affected by the hurricane. I, in good conscience, have decided to not take resources from the people that need it the most during this time. All the fighters on the card will be moved to our Oct. 1 card in Biloxi.
The Category 4 hurricane made landfall in Louisiana on Aug. 29, causing major damage to the state, along with Mississippi, Alabama, and other states as it moved northeast. It was one of the strongest hurricanes on record to hit the United States’ mainland.
GFC 2 has had its share of challenges beyond the hurricane, with a recent change to its heavyweight main event. Alex Nicholson was set to face Antonio Silva, but due to contractual restrictions, Silva was replaced with Jack May.
The inaugural GFC event took place in June and featured Jason Knight vs. Charles Bennett in the main event. Now, the promotion’s return will be delayed a month longer.
