Video: Was Evander Holyfield vs. Vitor Belfort a bridge too far even for novelty boxing?

Triller Fight Club held center stage this past Saturday night, with 58-year-old Evander Holyfield stepping in the ring to box former UFC champion Vitor Belfort.

Holyfield took the fight only after Oscar De La Hoya was forced to withdraw when he tested positive for COVID-19. The fact that Holyfield is almost 60 and hadn’t competed in a decade was reason enough to be concerned about his safety, and that concern grew after watching his open workout during fight week.

Predictably, the bout ended in the first round with 44-year-old Belfort winning by TKO. Thankfully, though, the damage to Holyfield was minimal after the referee seemed to show him some mercy with a stoppage that Holyfield didn’t appreciate but almost certainly was for his own good.

Still, a lot of people who watched the fight came away with a bad feeling afterward. And so we ask: Was Holyfield-Belfort a bridge too far in this era of novelty boxing events?
