Dana White confirms that Nick Diaz wants rematch with Robbie Lawler to be a middleweight bout

Four days before UFC 266 takes place, the news broke that the rematch between former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler and Nick Diaz may be moved to a middleweight bout.

The bout was originally slated to take place in the welterweight division. UFC president Dana White gave some insight into the situation on Tuesday following Dana White’s Contender Series at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. White revealed that Diaz is the one asking for the bout to take place at 185 pounds instead of 170 pounds.

“Robbie Lawler texted me that he’ll hit me (up) when he lands (in Las Vegas). So Robbie wants to talk to me about this whole thing,” White said during the DWCS post-fight press conference. “I know the Diaz camp wants the fight at 185.”

Lawler hasn’t agreed to accept the fight at 185 pounds. He’ll make that decision when he meets with White after arriving in Las Vegas. As for Diaz, White didn’t know why he wants to move the fight to 185 pounds.

“I don’t know. He probably doesn’t want to make weight,” speculated White about Diaz’ reasoning.
