Brent Primus calls Bellator’s vacant lightweight title booking ‘more of a politics thing,’ will be ready to fill in

Former Bellator lightweight champion Brent Primus rebounded from a loss in his prior fight to defeat ex-UFC champ Benson Henderson by unanimous decision Saturday at Bellator 268 from Footprint Center in Phoenix.

During his post-fight news conference, Primus reiterated a sentiment from earlier in the week: that he is no fan of the upcoming vacant 155-pound title between Peter Queally and Patricky Freire at Bellator 269 in the wake of Patrico Freire’s recent relinquishing of the belt.

If something happens to either Queally or Freire before the Nov. 5 matchup in Dublin, Primus said he’d be ready to step in.

“No disrespect to Scott Coker, Bellator, but I think Patricky and Queally fighting for the vacant belt, like I said, it’s a joke,” Primus said. “Patricky is coming off of two losses. Queally, who the hell has that guy beat, and who has he fought? He’s fought twice in the last three years. I think that’s a joke, man. If anything, me and Benson should’ve fought for the vacant belt right now. Or I could’ve thought of a few other guys that should be fighting for it besides those guys.

“I think it’s more of a politics thing. Patricio is like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna give it to my brother, because he’s my brother and I love him, so I’m gonna give him an opportunity.’ I just think that’s a joke. It’s not really what they should be doing. And Queally, I think him just coming from Straight Blast and Conor McGregor over there, and they’re trying to pump that a little bit. But, no, they should not be fighting for the belt at all. I think it’s a joke.

“Like I said, I’m gonna be in the gym, stay ready, keep my weight down. Hopefully if something happens, I’ll be ready to jump right in there. If not, I’m eyeballing one of those guys, and I’m gonna blast them for sure.”
