Marlon Vera: ‘Shocking’ win over ex-champ Frankie Edgar at UFC 268 would lead to title contention

NEW YORK – Marlon Vera is looking to do something spectacular against Frankie Edgar at UFC 268.

Vera (17-7-1 MMA, 11-6 UFC) gets another opportunity to take out a former UFC champion Saturday when he meets Edgar (24-9-1 MMA, 18-9-1 UFC) in a bantamweight bout on the pay-per-view main card at Madison Square Garden. Prelims air on ESPNNews and stream on ESPN+.

In the first “Chito” fight against a former UFC titleholder, he came up short on the scorecards against Jose Aldo. He rebounded from that fight with a win over Davey Grant, and now he faces Edgar.

In Vera’s mind, this is his moment to take out a future UFC Hall of Famer in violent fashion and show he belongs on the upper tier at 135 pounds.

“I don’t think the UFC is looking for almost a win, – they’re looking for shocking performances, and that’s what I know I can do,” Vera told MMA Junkie and other at UFC 268 media day. “I’ve fought the who’s who of the division. I’ve had setbacks. I’ve lost fights before. But I’m barely losing them. I really don’t even lose them. Adjustments have been made to get past those fights. … It’s just a matter of time until I get that belt.”
