Bellator 270 predictions, preview for ‘Queally vs Pitbull 2’

Bellator 270: “Queally vs Pitbull 2” will take place tomorrow (Fri., Nov. 5, 2021) from inside 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland. Headlining the Showtime-televised event will be a title fight for the vacant Lightweight strap between Peter Queally and Patricky Freire. Patricio Freire vacated the title a few months ago to focus on his quest to win back the Featherweight title he lost earlier this year to A.J. McKee.

In the co-main event, James Gallagher returns to take on Patchy Mix in a pivotal Bantamweight bout.

Peter Queally vs. Patricky “Pitbull” Freire

After a couple of previous failed attempts to win the Lightweight title, Patricky Freire will get one more opportunity to crown himself champion. Standing in front of him, though, is a man who is also on a quest for gold and hoping to become the first Irish champion for Bellator MMA. The two men initially threw down at Bellator 258 earlier this year in a 155-pound bout that ended in rather anticlimactic fashion. “Pitbull” was not allowed to continue after the second round because of a nasty cut above his eye, resulting in a TKO win for Queally. That will give the fiery Irishman extra motivation and confidence coming into the rematch, and he is going to need it because Freire is on a mission for vengeance. The beef between the two camps runs deep, so there is that added factor. There isn’t much secret as to what each man wants to do once fight night rolls around since they both love to stand and bang. I still firmly believe “Pitbull” is the most well-rounded fighter of the two and that will show this time around. Queally obviously has a puncher’s chance (and a doctor’s chance, too) but “Pitbull” will prevail this time around, stopping his foe in under four rounds.

Prediction: Freire via third-round TKO

James Gallagher vs. Patrick Mix

After having his roll slowed by Ricky Bandejas in 2018 — the first and only loss of his MMA career — James Gallagher has really picked up the pace by winning four straight, three via first-round submission. Now, he is making a serious run for a shot at the title if he can get a win over Mix, a man he’s been scheduled to fight before. But Mix has championship dreams of his own, and after going 4-1 inside the Bellator cage a win over Gallagher could get him closer to the promised land. Mix and Gallagher have similar fighting styles but despite having good hands, both men can get the job done in the submission game. Of Gallagher’s 11 wins, nine of them have come by way of submission, eight in the very first round. Mix, meanwhile, has 10 wins via submission which means this fight will likely play out on the feet. Go figure, right? I don’t expect this fight to go the distance because these two men simply do not like one another and Gallagher is out to punish Mix for coming in heavy. Sergio Pettis is scheduled to defend his 135-pound title in December against Kyoji Horiguchi, and I fully expect the winner of this fight to face the winner of that title fight.

Prediction: Gallagher via second-round KO

Ilias Bulaid vs. Georges Sasu

In a battle of relative Bellator newcomers, Bulaid and Sasu got bumped up to the main card after some last-minute reshuffling. Bulaid is 2-0 in his MMA career with both fights going down under the Bellator banner. Sasu, meanwhile, will be making his promotional debut against Bulaid. He has been a pro for six years but he has been very inconsistent when it comes to his fighting schedule, competing only six times during that span. In fact, he hasn’t stepped foot inside an MMA cage in three years so he will be coming in pretty rusty in his Bellator debut. At this point, this fight is 50/50 for me because neither man really has anything that stands out to convince me he is better than the other in all honesty.

Prediction: Bulaid via unanimous decision

Daniel Weichel vs. Pedro Carvalho

Former Featherweight title contender Pedro Carvalho has seen better days. After starting his Bellator career with four straight wins, he has dropped two straight to former division champion Patricio Freire and was most recently knocked out by Jay-Jay Wilson at Bellator 257, his second such defeat. He is still ranked at No. 7 and a win over Weichel (No. 6) could put him back into the Top 5. Weichel has also been a bit inconsistent over the last few years, going just 2-3 since 2018. He did take the aforementioned Patricio Freire the distance a few years back so he has shown he has what it takes to hang with the elite. A win over Carvalho gives him his first win streak in five years and gives him a boost in the rankings to inch him closer to a title fight. Carvalho has the experience edge here but I feel he’s been missing something for a while. He definitely has the tools to get back to his winning ways, but it won’t be happening this time around.

Prediction: Weichel via split decision
