Jorge Masvidal expects Colby Covington to ‘burn’ MMA Masters after UFC 268 loss

Jorge Masvidal thinks Colby Covington will switch camps once again after losing to Kamaru Usman for a second time.

Covington (16-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC) fell short to welterweight champion Usman in a hard-fought battle this past Saturday at UFC 268. He was able to withstand two early knockdowns to come back strong in the fourth and fifth rounds.

Covington, who parted ways with his longtime gym, American Top Team, has recently been training at MMA Masters, which cornered him for his past two fights. But former ATT teammate-turned-rival Masvidal (35-15 MMA, 14-9 UFC) isn’t expecting Covington to last at his new gym for too long.

“2021-2022 prediction: Colby burns MMA master like he has every gym and every coach he ever had by not paying and talking shit on the way out. Rinse wash repeat.”

“Gonna expose the fake real soon. Like father like son.”

The root of Masvidal’s falling out with Covington was due to Covington’s alleged failure to pay Masvidal’s boxing coach, Paulino Hernandez, for helping him prepare for his interim welterweight title fight against Rafael dos Anjos in 2018. Things turned ugly from that point on, but the pair have yet to settle their score.

Although Masvidal is currently booked to face Leon Edwards at UFC 269 on Dec. 11, Covington called him out at the UFC 268 post-fight news conference and sees him as the logical next step in his path back to a title shot.

UFC 268 took place Saturday at Madison Square Garden. The main card streamed on ESPN+ pay-per-view after prelims on ESPN News/ESPN+.
