Jorge Masvidal out of UFC 269 due to injury

The UFC 269 welterweight bout between Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards is off.

Masvidal has been forced to withdraw from the highly anticipated match due to an undisclosed injury. ESPN first reported the news on Wednesday.

UFC Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell informed ESPN of the development but did not provide a timeframe for Masvidal’s return. It’s also unknown whether Edwards will remain on the fight card, if the match will be rebooked, or if a replacement will be sought.

Masvidal (35-15) is coming off back-to-back losses to champion Kamaru Usman. Edwards (19-3, 1 NC) is ranked No. 3 in the 170-pound division and is riding a nine-fight winning streak.

Masvidal and Edwards were involved in a backstage altercation in March 2019 that resulted in Masvidal punching Edwards with a combination. He later coined the phrase “three-piece and a soda” when describing the incident.

UFC 269 takes place on Dec. 11 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The event featured two world title bouts. In the main event, lightweight champion Charles Oliveira puts his title on the line for the first time against top contender Dustin Poirier. Amanda Nunes puts her bantamweight championship on the line against Julianna Pena in the co-main event.
