UFC 269 results: Charles Oliveira taps Dustin Poirier standing up to retain title

LAS VEGAS – Charles Oliveira has submitted more opponents than anyone else in UFC history, and he added Dustin Poirier to his list Saturday.

In the UFC 269 main event, Oliveira (32-8 MMA, 20-8 UFC) tapped Poirier (28-7 MMA, 20-6 UFC) out with a rear-naked choke to retain his title at 1:02 of Round 3.

UFC 269 takes place Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.

The first round was as action-packed as they come. In the opening seconds, Poirier dropped Oliveira with a punch. When Oliveira rose back to his feet, the pace was as frantic. Both men landed significant strike after significant strike.

Poirier’s weapon of choice was his boxing, which was perhaps more effective than Oliveira’s mixed-strike approach. However, Oliveira continued to dig the body with front kicks that seemed to bother Poirier. Oliveira’s clinch game and knees to the body also had success, as well as his boxing.

Early in Round 2, Oliviera attempted to drag Poirier to the ground. As he snuck to the back, Poirier bucked him off and dumped him to the canvas. Oliveira then used wrist control to roll Poirier down. Oliveira ended up in Poirier’s guard where he landed big elbows and other ground-and-pound until the round ended.

Immediately in Round 3, Oliviera grabbed hold of Poirier and jumped on the back. He worked for the choke and switched grips until it was locked in.

With the victory, Oliveira successfully defends his lightweight title in his first attempt. At UFC 262 in May, Oliveira defeated Michael Chandler via second-round knockout to claim the 155-pound title vacated by former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov after his retirement.

As for Poirier, the loss snaps a three-fight winning streak for “The Diamond” and marks the second time he’s come up short in undisputed UFC title fights. At UFC 236 in April 2019, Poirier defeated Max Holloway to earn an interim lightweight title. However, he was unable to unify, as he lost via submission to the then-champion Nurmagomedov at UFC 244 in September of the same year.
