Dana White: Julianna Peña vs. Amanda Nunes 2 ‘will be the biggest women’s fight of all-time’

UFC president Dana White thinks the rematch between Julianna Pena and Amanda Nunes is going to set records for the promotion.

After Peña (11-4 MMA, 7-2 UFC) pulled off a historic upset of Nunes (21-5 MMA, 14-2 UFC) to win the women’s bantamweight title at UFC 269 this month, an immediate rematch appears inevitable. Both fighters have said it’s their desire to run it back, it’s just a matter of when and where it will happen.

White is keen on making the fight happen, too, and is confident it’s going to grab the attention of the combat sports world. In his opinion, the fight between Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm currently hold serve as the premier women’s MMA pair, but White thinks Peña vs. Nunes 2 will usurp that contest for the top spot.

“The Peña rematch with Nunes will probably be the biggest women’s fight of all time,” White said in a recent interview with ESPN. “That rematch will be the biggest women’s fight of all time. (Right now) it’s Ronda Rousey and Holly. Every way that it could possibly beat it, it will. I don’t think it. I know it. It will crush that fight.”

White did not give any additional details about his plans for the rematch. Peña told MMA Junkie in the aftermath of UFC 269 that she intends to take some time off from competition to focus on her daughter, but will be ready to run it back when it’s offered. Nunes, meanwhile, said she has to get her ducks in a row to ensure there’s no repeat result.
