The UFC’s knockout king Derrick Lewis recently had a run-in with the law.
Based on a video posted to his Instagram account on Wednesday, Lewis was involved in a traffic stop and he recorded the tail end of the events on his cell phone, which was awkwardly placed between his legs.
The officer handed Lewis his clipboard and asked for his signature for a warning ticket while explaining that he can be pulled over for not having a front license plate on his vehicle. The conversation seemed friendly and the officer even provided some advice for Lewis on how to resolve the issue.
Assuming the traffic stop took place in Texas, which is a two-plate state, drivers are required to have a license plate on the front and back of their vehicle. Without a front plate, an officer legally has probable cause to make a traffic stop. Whether or not the officer issues a citation for the misdemeanor offense is up to them, with the driver facing a fine of up to $200. Luckily for Lewis, he got off with a warning.
As the officer walked back to his car, Lewis picked up his phone and sent a message to his recently knocked out UFC Fight Night 199 opponent, Chris Daukaus, who was a police officer in Philadelphia.
“Alright Chris Daukaus, I’m still 2-0,” Lewis said. “They just gave me a warning. You tried it.”
