Ray Borg after comeback win at Eagle FC 44: ‘I’m still one of the best in the world’

MIAMI – Ray Borg showed he can dig deep and pull off a win when a fight isn’t going his way against Cody Gibson at Eagle FC 44.

That’s a sign of an elite fighter, and Borg (15-5) thinks he’s still on that level after overcoming a tough first round to dominate Gibson (18-8) for a unanimous decision win on Friday.

There were many questions around Borg after his messy UFC stint came to an end following his final octagon appearance in May 2020. He’s now 2-0 since leaving the promotion, though, and at just 28, still feels poised to do big things in the sport.

“I’m still one of the best in the world no matter where I’m fighting, no matter who I’m fighting,” Borg told MMA Junkie and other reporters post-fight at Eagle FC 44. “I’m still one of the best in the world and I’m just going to continue to prove that.”

Borg tumultuous UFC run included a bevy of personal issues, key fight withdrawals due to injury or weight cutting and more. He won his first fight after leaving the organization at a UEA Warriors event in July, but Eagle FC 44 was his chance to get back in the spotlight on U.S. soil.

It wasn’t going well early, but then Borg made and adjustment and cruised to victory.

“My coaches told me, ‘Hey, Ray. You’ve got to clean it up,’” Borg said. “Had a rough first round. I’ve got to change some things to make sure that doesn’t happen. I’m. not a slow starter.”

Borg said he’s hopeful to remain with Eagle FC, and although the fight with Gibson happened at bantamweight, the organization is said to be starting a flyweight division in the future.

Wherever and whenever he’s needed, though, Borg said he’ll be ready to fight.

“I got a couple little boo-boos,” Borg said. “If they want me to fight in March, I’ll fight in March.”
