PHOENIX – Sabah Homasi is known for his brawling style and knockout power, but at Bellator 273, he showed something a bit different.
For the first time since 2014, Homasi (16-10 MMA, 5-4 BMMA) won by submission and beat Jaleel Willis (15-4 MMA, 2-2 BMMA) in the main card opener Saturday at Footprint Center – and he thinks it’s time his grappling earned some respect.
“I think my submission game is underrated big-time,” Homasi told MMA Junkie at a post-fight news conference. “You guys don’t see much of it because I’d rather f*cking take somebody’s head off. That’s what I wanted to do with him and I don’t even know how I ended up on the guy’s back to mat-return him. I’ve got to rewatch the fight, but I’d much rather take his head off his shoulders. If I didn’t take him down and take his back and submit him, I would’ve f*cking knocked him out.”
The fight was quick. After a blow knocked Willis backward, the fight hit the mat. Homasi got the tap at the 1:42 mark of Round 1. With the victory, Homasi snapped a two-fight skid – something he thinks will snowball his momentum through 2022.
“I want to get my ass back in the top 10 and slowly climb this ladder,” Homasi said. “Yeah, that’s pretty much it. This is what I’m working for. I want to fight tough guys. I want to fight the best. I want to test myself, mainly. I want to see how far I can go. The main thing is that I believe in myself. It started coming together for me in my thirties. The more I fight, the more I step in there, the more confident I am (and) the bigger I grow. I just become more dangerous.”
