Gilbert Burns sees Jorge Masvidal finishing Colby Covington at UFC 272
Enter another established welterweight who sees Jorge Masvidal topping Colby Covington.
Just like ex-UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, former title challenger Burns thinks Masvidal (35-15 MMA, 12-8 UFC) has the tools to beat Covington (16-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC).
According to Tipico, Masvidal is a +265 underdog heading into his UFC 272 headliner against friend-turned-foe Covington in March. But despite the odds against “Gamebred,” Burns (19-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) thinks he’ll finish Covington.
“Everybody thinks Colby is going to get an easy win with the takedowns. I don’t think so,” Burns said in an interview with “The Schmo.” “To be honest, I completely disagree with that. I know Masvidal knows how risky this fight is. If he loses, it’s going to be very tough for him – three losses (in a row).
“I think Masvidal is working super hard. I know a couple of his teammates. I know he’s working super hard. I’m going with the upset. I’m going Masvidal with the win – a lot of body shots. He can hurt Colby in the body, then in the later rounds get a finish. I see Masvidal getting a finish and then I think Masvidal and (Vicente) Luque will be a freaking crazy fight.”
Burns is on his own road back to a title shot and is currently rumored to be facing rising unbeaten star Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 273 on April 9, but has yet to be handed a contract.
