Video: Is Islam Makhachev the true No. 1 UFC lightweight contender?

With 10 straight wins in the stacked UFC lightweight division, Islam Makhachev has his sights set on a title shot.

After taking care of business in the first round against Bobby Green at UFC Fight Night 202, Makhachev is firmly in the title picture, but there are a few other names in the conversation as well.

In the latest USA TODAY SPORTS/MMA Junkie rankings update, the Dagestani grappler rose to the No. 4 position among lightweights, with only Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, and current UFC champ Charles Oliveira ahead of him. Makhachev believes he has done enough for a title shot, but some, including UFC president Dana White, think otherwise.

Since Oliveira is set to face Gaethje at UFC 274 for the title, is Makhachev really the No. 1 contender in waiting? If not, who is ahead of him?

In the video above, our panel of Mike Bohn, Danny Segura, and Brian “Goze” Garcia discuss this topic along with host “Gorgeous” George Garcia.

“Spinning Back Clique” is released each Tuesday on MMA Junkie’s YouTube channel. You can watch the full episode in the video below.
