Derek Brunson raises $10,000 for Cain Velasquez’s legal fees

The MMA community’s support for former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez continues to show.

Velasquez was arrested and is facing a number of charges including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon after events that took place Monday. According to reports and court documents, Velasquez allegedly targeted and shot at a man who was accused of molesting a close relative “100 times.”

When the potential motive of Velasquez’s alleged actions became known, “Free Cain” became a trending theme across social media, as many fighters wrote messages showing their support.

UFC middleweight Derek Brunson took it upon himself to lead a charge focusing on providing financial support for Velasquez through the sale of t-shirts on his website. The “Free Cain Velasquez” shirt has been available to purchase for $27.99, with Brunson donating 50% of the proceeds towards Velasquez’s legal fees.

On Friday, Brunson posted a photo with an oversized check totaling $10,000 to be sent to Velasquez’s family.

The legal process for Velasquez is underway as he awaits arraignment on March 7. He remains in custody at the Santa Clara County main jail where he will remain at least until then, should the judge decide to set bail. If convicted of attempted murder, Velasquez faces a minimum of 20 years up to life, but could also face additional time if found guilty of other charges.
