Spinning Back Clique: UFC 272 fallout, reaction to Cain Velasquez case

Check out this week’s “Spinning Back Clique,” MMA Junkie’s weekly show that takes a spin through the biggest topics in mixed martial arts.

This week, our panel of Mike Bohn, Nolan King and Brian “Goze” Garcia discuss these five topics with host “Gorgeous” George Garcia:

  • On Saturday night, Colby Covington defeated Jorge Masvidal in the main event, at UFC 272. After all of the buildup, all the personal trash talk, and a convincing unanimous decision, are you satisfied closing the book on the rivalry between these two former best friends-turned enemies.
  • After the fight was over, Covington immediately turned his attention to another former American Top Team teammate in Dustin Poirier, as he went after him, his wife and his kid. What did you think of the callout itself, and is this a fight that should be made?
  • In the co-main event, Rafael dos Anjos defeated Renato Moicano pretty soundly on the judges’ scorecards. Most of the talk on the broadcast and all over social media was focused on the fight NOT getting stopped. As you know, aside from Moicano quitting (and that wasn’t going to happen), his corner, the ringside physician and the referee also could have stopped the fight. How did this all sit with you?
  • Aside from the main and co-main, there were 11 other fights on Saturday’s UFC 272 card, which included an emotional win for Maryna Moroz, huge wins for Bryce Mitchell and Marina Rodriguez, the final fight of Greg Hardy’s UFC contract, and more. What was another big takeaway from the card?
  • Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was arrested last week and charged with attempted murder after he allegedly chased down and shot a man in San Jose, Calif. Police said Velasquez was after a man accused of molesting one of his underage relatives. Since a possible motive was revealed, Velasquez has received tremendous support with the “Free Cain” movement among those who think his alleged actions were justified, although a judge denied his bail Monday. This case has put a spotlight on morality vs. legality. Given what we know, what are your thoughts on this tragic situation?

“Spinning Back Clique” is released each Tuesday on MMA Junkie’s YouTube channel. You can watch the full episode in the video above.
