Tyrone Spong returns to boxing to face former world champion Andy Ruiz Jr. at Triller Fight Club event

Triller Fight Club has announced a major heavyweight clash to headline an upcoming pay-per-view event.

The promotion will host a clash between former world champion Andy Ruiz Jr. and Tyrone Spong, who is undefeated in the boxing ring with 14 victories and 13 knockouts. The 10-round main event bout will take place at Plaza de Toros in Mexico City, Mexico on July 16. The event will be available to purchase via FITE and Triller Fight Club’s official website.

In addition to boxing, Spong, a World Series of Fighting veteran, competes in kickboxing and MMA. His most recent outing was in the MMA cage for a main event bout against Sergei Kharitonov with Khabib Nurmagomedov’s promotion, Eagle FC 44. The 36-year-old Spong returns to the boxing ring where he last picked up a knockout victory over Jeyson Minda in August 2019.

Ruiz Jr., 32, made waves across the combat sports world in June 2019 when he knocked out then-undefeated world champion Anthony Joshua at Madison Square Garden. Ruiz Jr. entered the contest as a massive underdog, emerging victorious as high as a 25 to 1 underdog. Although he would go on to lose the rematch, Ruiz Jr. rebounded nicely in his most recent outing, picking up a unanimous decision win over Chris Arreola in May 2021.

Triller has hosted a number of pay-per-view events recently that featured notable MMA veterans. In November, the promotion debuted Triad Combat, a hybrid rules style of fighting that pitted teams of MMA fighters and boxers against one another in a triangular ring, with a main event between former UFC champion Frank Mir vs. boxing’s Kubrat Pulev.

In the traditional boxing ring, Triller Fight Club promoted an event in September featuring boxing legend Evander Holyfield vs. former UFC champion Vitor Belfort. MMA legends and former UFC champions Anderson Silva and Tito Ortiz also competed against each other in the co-main event that evening.
