UFC 274 Live Results: When, Where, and Who?

UFC 274: Oliveira vs. Gaethje takes place on Saturday, May 7, at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

The UFC 274 fight card is topped by what was supposed to be a championship doubleheader, but that was before now-former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira missed weight. He was supposed to put his belt on the line opposite No. 1 ranked Justin Gaethje in the main event, while women’s strawweight champion Rose Namajunas defends her title against No. 2 ranked Carla Esparza in the UFC 274 co-main event.

UFC 274 main event: Charles Oliveira vs. Justin Gaethje

Oliveira (32-8, 1NC) won the belt after former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov retired. He is currently on a 10-fight winning streak that includes wins over the likes of Tony Ferguson, Michael Chandler, and Dustin Poirier. Gaethje (23-3) has won five of his last six bouts with the lone loss being to Nurmagomedov. He also has wins over Ferguson and Chandler.

Only now, after missing weight, Oliveira can no longer retain the belt. Upon the start of the UFC 274 main event, Oliveira will no longer be champion because he weighed 0.5 pounds above the championship limit. The UFC lightweight title is still on the line, but only for Gaethje. Oliveira is not eligible to recapture the belt. If he defeats Gaethje, Oliveira will automatically become the No. 1 contender for the belt and face the next challenger at a time and place to be determined.

UFC 274 co-main event: Rose Namajunas vs. Carla Esparza

Namajunas (11-4) first won the strawweight title by defeating longtime champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. After losing the belt to Jessica Andrade, she avenged that loss and then took the belt back from Zhang Weili. She also defended the belt against the UFC’s first Chinese champion. Esparza (18-6) was the UFC’s first strawweight champion, having defeated Namajunas in 2014 following a stint on The Ultimate Fighter. She is currently on a five-fight winning streak that put her in a position to rematch Namajunas and see if she can win the belt again.

Oldies but Goodies

Beyond the two title bouts, the UFC 274 main card is lined with three oldies but goodies battles between several fighters staring into the sunset of their fighting careers. Michael Chandler, at 36 years of age, is the young buck of the lot, squaring off against Tony Ferguson, 38, in a fight to remain relevant in the UFC lightweight title picture. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, 40, faces Ovince Saint Preux, who is now 39 years old. And Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at 39 tries to end a six-fight winless streak, as he faces fellow veteran, 37-year-old Joe Lauzon. Cerrone is tied for most post-fight bonuses in UFC history, while Lauzon is tied for second most post-fight bonuses.

Be on the lookout for several of these fighters to possibly lay their gloves on the floor of the Octagon on Saturday night. Several have been continuously nudged towards retirement in the lead-up to UFC 274, not just because of age, but because of dwindling results in recent years.
