Randy Brown stole some of Khaos Williams’ thunder, so understands fan reaction

PHOENIX – With five wins in his past six fights, Randy Brown sent a reminder this past Saturday that he’s a viable force to be reckoned with at welterweight.

Elevated to the pay-per-view opener when the Donald Cerrone-Joe Lauzon fight fell off the afternoon of UFC 274 in Phoenix, Brown (15-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) took a split decision from Khaos Williams (13-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC) for his third straight win.

Brown, who got his start in the UFC through “Dana White: Lookin’ for a Fight more than six years ago, said he told the UFC president to not forget about him.

He also said at his post-fight news conference that the boos he heard when he won are to be expected.

“Khaos is a popular dude,” Brown said. “He burst on the scene and made a lot of noise, and I stole some of that thunder. That’s their guy. … It was a close fight. You know how it is in MMA. It doesn’t really bother me. I know what’s up. I know what it was in there. When you go back through and count the strikes, you’ll see me smacking him up.”

Brown said the back-and-forth fight he had with Williams was enjoyable. It piggybacks on the two 2021 wins he had against Alex Oliveira and Jared Gooden. He also now has back-to-back decision wins after a stretch of three straight victories in which he didn’t need the judges.

He’d like to get back to finishing fights.

“I thought it was cool – I went out there and had fun,” Brown said. “I showed my diversity, perseverance. I’m tired of showing perseverance, but it was fun. I went out there and did my thing. The big, bad, powerful monster – Khaos with the power, it’s reminiscent of (Muhammad) Ali-(Joe) Frazier. Or Ali-(George) Foreman.”
