Davey Grant doesn’t count on post-fight bonuses, but sure is making a habit of getting them

LAS VEGAS – With $50,000 post-fight bonus awards in four straight fights, Davey Grant has had a nice run of things even without his regular checks.

The Brit got extra checks for knockouts of Martin Day and Jonathan Martinez. But his last two bonuses have been for Fight of the Night – in losses, something he clearly doesn’t prefer.

Grant (11-6 MMA, 4-5 UFC) will go after five straight bonuses Saturday when he takes on Louis Smolka (17-8 MMA, 8-8 UFC) in a bantamweight bout on the main card at UFC on ESPN 36 in Las Vegas.

“I’m making a habit of (getting bonuses),” Grant said at Wednesday’s UFC on ESPN 36 media day. “It’s nice to go and get the bonuses. I never go out hunting for them. It’s always going to be the case: You just try to put on the best performance possible.

“But I feel like I’m really getting into the swing of things. Even with the last couple of losses, I’m still fighting the way I want to fight. Regardless of what happens, I’m putting everything into my career. … (The bonus) is a nice consolation (for a loss). At the end of the day, I’m a hell of a lot more devastated just off the loss that the bonus doesn’t even come into it. … The bonus is not better than just getting the win, even if I was getting half as much money, because I just want to win every fight.”

UFC on ESPN 36 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The main card airs on ESPN2 and streams on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN2/ESPN+.
