Relive the time Miesha Tate choked out Holly Holm to win a UFC title

Miesha Tate is back this week, and in a new weight class.

Tate (19-8 MMA, 6-5 UFC) will drop down to flyweight from her longtime home at bantamweight when she takes on Lauren Murphy (15-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) to open the main card at UFC on ABC 3, which takes place Saturday at UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y. The main card airs on ABC and streams on ESPN+ following prelims on ESPN/ESPN+.

It’s a critical fight for both, considering many think women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko has all but cleaned out the division. The winner of Tate’s fight with Murphy could be in line to fight the champ for the title.

Fighting for UFC belts is something Tate has plenty of experience with. She was a Strikeforce champion, but lost the belt to Ronda Rousey. Once they both were in the UFC, Tate lost a title challenge to Rousey in 2013.

But then she went on a four-fight tear to get a shot at then-champ Holly Holm. And at UFC 196, Tate pulled off a fifth-round stunner when she choked Holm unconscious to win the belt.

Tate retired after a 2016 loss to Raquel Pennington, but returned in 2021. After a 1-1 start to her comeback, she has dropped to flyweight with the hopes of a title run there.

But before that kicks off against Murphy on Saturday, check out the video above for a look back at the exciting way Tate won her first UFC title.
