Islam Makhachev doesn’t want to simply be called champion after UFC 284: ‘I’m the best fighter’

PERTH, Australia – Islam Makhachev wants more credit than simply a champion’s label.

Saturday, Makhachev (24-1 MMA, 13-1 UFC) notched a win over UFC-ranked No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter Alexander Volkanovski (25-2 MMA, 12-1 UFC) in the main event of UFC 284 at RAC Arena. Prior to the bout, Makhachev was No. 2. With the result in the books, Makhachev thinks it’s time labels swapped.

“Doesn’t matter how I won today,” Makhachev told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a post-fight news conference. “Now, I’m not just the champion, I’m the best fighter in the world. I’m very happy. Now people are going to call me not just champ, but best fighter in the world. This is my dream. It doesn’t matter how I won. I’m very happy. … Now, I’m the best fighter and champion. Dana, I’m waiting. Call me.”

Makhachev, 31, displayed much respect for his opponent Volkanovski, who he now designates as No. 2 in the pound-for-pound conversation.

In a few weeks, a third name could enter the public conversation, however, as former pound-for-pound king Jon Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) is set to compete at UFC 285, his first competition in over three years.

Even if Jones wins, Makhachev doesn’t think it’ll amount to a shift into the top pound-for-pound rankings slot due to the closeness of some of Jones’ fights and the level of competition in the upcoming one.

“Jon Jones is a great fighter, of course,” Makhachev said. “He is the best. Last time, he won a split decision. He has always hard fights. I don’t know. I don’t think after his fight, it’s going to impress people. Why am I best right now? Because I beat best fighter in the world. That’s why I think I more deserve this. If somebody wants to be best, I’m coming.”
