UFC 290 bout scratched because of failed medical clearance

Jack Della Maddalena had his UFC 290 opponent fall out for the second time in less than a week. Now he is without a fight and unsure of when he’ll be rescheduled.

Having fought his way into the UFC middleweight rankings, Della Maddalena had been scheduled to fight Sean Brady at UFC 290 on Saturday. That bout fell through less than a week ago when Brady posted on Instagram that he was suffering from septic bursitis in his left elbow.

UFC newcomer Josiah Harrell quickly stepped in to keep Della Maddalena on the fight card. They each stepped on the scale at Friday morning’s UFC 290 official weigh-in, both men making weight.

A few hours later, reporter Ariel Helwani posted that the UFC said Harrell was out of the bout after failing to gain medical clearance. Officials gave no word as to how soon Della Maddalena might be able to get rescheduled on another fight card.

UFC 290 still features two title fights

UFC 290 will move forward with 13 bouts, including two championship fights. Featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski faces interim titleholder Yair Rodriguez in a unification bout. Flyweight champion Brandon Moreno makes the first defense of his newly re-unified title by fighting Alexandre Pantoja in the UFC 290 co-main event.
