Justin Gaethje wants to win ‘iconic’ “BMF Belt” for his legacy

Lightweight contenders Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier headline this weekend’s UFC 291 fight card with the “BMF” belt on the line.

The BMF (Baddest Motherf**cker) belt originated to promotion a fight between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz at UFC 244 in November 2019.  Masvidal won the symbolic belt by doctor stoppage.

This weekend, the belt will be on the line a second time and for Gaethje it’s about legacy.

“It’s complete separate from the actual championship.  It’s really iconic,” Gaethje told TMZ Sports.  “There’s only been two guys in the world that’s ever fought for it.  We’ll be two out of four guys now and I think it does great things for legacy.  That’s ultimate what we’re here to build, our legacy.”

“The Highlight” believe the winner of the “BMF” belt will get a title shot in their next outing.

“It kind of pulls us right into the championship talks,” he said.  “He’s the number two-ranked by in the world.  I’m the number three-ranked guy in the world, so no matter what it’s a given that the winner of this fight will fight the winner in October.  If one of us is able to go in there and get a quick knockout and take no damage, there’s a slight possibility that maybe we’ll be ready for October.”
