Sean O’Malley finishes Aljamain Sterling in UFC 292 main event

A bantamweight title bout between champion Aljamain Sterling and second-ranked Sean O’Malley headlined UFC 292 on Saturday.

It was Sterling’s fourth title defense and O’Malley’s first championship bout.  Sterling predicted a first-round stoppage while O’Malley predicted a knockout finish.

Sterling took the fight to O’Malley landing a leg kick.  O’Malley pressed forward briefly and landed a front kick to the body.  Sterling responded with two leg kicks.  Sterling closed the distance and landed short punches in the clinch at the end of the opening round.

O’Malley slipped and Sterling immediately looked to take him down.  O’Malley defended.  O’Malley landed a right hand that face-planed Sterling.  He landed hammer fists while standing until the referee stepped in to stop the fight.

The official time of the stoppage as 0:51 of the second round,  Sean O’Malley is the new UFC bantamweight champion.
