Paulo Costa surgery just weeks before his Khamzat Chimaev fight at UFC 294

As his opponent has been training hard in anticipation of UFC 294, Paulo Costa has been enduring his own battles outside of the cage. According to the outspoken middleweight, he underwent elbow surgery just three weeks ago and will have a short time to recover before he must make the walk to the octagon.

Despite being his usual self, having fun on social media, and entertaining his fanbase, ‘Borrachinha’ surprised everyone when he shared a post on his injured elbow. The injury was so bad it required surgery and the Brazilian was unable to lift his arm after going under the knife.

Although the injured elbow is a problem, Costa took the time to share some positive news on his recovery and assured fans that he continues to improve 3 weeks post-surgery.

“How strong are you? You never really know until you get tested by [the] fire of life.” Said Costa. “I did surgery 3 weeks ago, 10 seams size. But I know how tough I [am] and [I] continue improving and overcoming myself. It doesn’t stop me, still doing my things sparring and everything. I’m so [blessed], God gives me exceptional condition, and surrounded [me] by great people.”

While fans will be worried about how he’ll fare next time out, his recovery seems to be going well. The South American is now comfortable hitting pads and looks sharp during sparring as he showcased at the end of his Instagram post.

Paulo Costa is a powerhouse who is a problem wherever the fight takes place and he will be welcomed back to the sport by the dominant Khamzat Chimaev. ‘Borz’ has wrecked his way through the rankings, beating contenders in two different weight classes, and now looks set on making a run at the UFC middleweight title. The pair have been at odds for some time after their altercation at the UFC PI last year.

It is currently unclear whether Israel Adesanya will get an immediate shot at Sean Strickland to reclaim his 185 lbs throne. Whether a rematch happens or not, the winner of the blockbuster Costa and Chimaev clash will almost certainly force themselves into the title picture.
