Derrick Lewis shares hilarious response to recent arrest

Shocking news recently surfaced surrounding Derrick Lewis just days ahead of his fight in Brazil this weekend. Although the bout seems to be still going ahead, the heavyweight standout did put his main event appearance in danger after he was arrested for driving over the speed limit.

According to reports, the UFC star was caught and detained for ridiculously driving at speeds as high as 136 mph in a 50 mph zone. The Texas native weaved through traffic in his red Lamborghini, making dangerous lane changes before allegedly passing a member of law enforcement.

For the first time since his arrest, Derrick Lewis spoke out in defense of himself and gave a typical hilarious response on the matter. When referencing the recent charges, ‘The Black Beast’ opted to utilize the ‘Shaggy defense’ strategy.

“Nah, I don’t think that was me,” Lewis claimed while denying any involvement in his recent reckless driving case. “That guy had hair. You seen the picture? I don’t got no hair. That ain’t me.”

The arrest record from the night of the careless driving case made multiple mistakes when detailing the defendant. As stated by the report, Derrick Lewis was supposedly 6-foot-2 instead of his usual 6-foot-4 height, 215 pounds which, again, is much less than his natural weight, and apparently opted for a change from his usual bald head to grow some black hair. The ‘Shaggy defense’ is a common strategy deployed by the defendant in court—exactly what Derrick Lewis employed during his recent case. When accused of any wrongdoing, the defending party simply denies the charges by stating, “It wasn’t me”. The defensive tactic pays homage to and gets its name from the hit song released in 2000 by popular musician Shaggy.

Is Derrick Lewis still fighting this weekend?

Despite the ongoing charges, Derrick Lewis looks like his heavyweight headliner this weekend will still go ahead.

The veteran collides with rising contender Jailton Almeida at UFC Sao Paulo on November 4. ‘Malhadinho’ looks to make it six straight inside the octagon and continue his unbeaten run since signing for the promotion after his standout display on the Contender Series in 2021.

Cutting his three-fight losing streak last time out with a beautiful flying knee, Lewis wants to make yet another title charge but will have to bypass the horrible stylistic matchup on enemy soil this Saturday.
