Dustin Poirier: ‘To make it on UFC 300 would be cool’

Dustin Poirier doesn’t have a fight lined up but admits fighting on the UFC 300 fight card ‘would be cool.’

Ranked third in the 155-pound division, Poirier is coming off a knockout loss to Justin Gaethje in their rematch at UFC 291 in July.  He’s waiting for the fight promotion to call with an interesting opponent, or one that makes him nervous.

“I don’t have any plans.  If they call me with a name that’s exciting and makes sense, like the Gaethje thing, that was one of those.  I was kind of waiting for something fun.  When they called me with that I was nervous.  What happened I thought could happen, so that made me excited.  We’ll see.  When they call with that name, then I’ll do it,” Poirier told MMAJunkie

“I made my debut at UFC 125, January 1st, 2011.  I’m not going to be here at UFC 400.  I’m 34-years old, so to make it on that UFC 300 would be cool if I get the right opponent, an exciting fight.  So we’ll see.  I don’t know.  I could fight before then.  Who knows,” Poirier continued.

A fight Poirier would say yes to is a trilogy bout with Gaethje.  If it’s on the UFC 300 fight card, even better.

“If I was in Justin’s shoes, if he’s guaranteed at title shot, you might not want to risk it, but hey, this is fighting.  People get antsy.  We’ll see what happens, but I’m definitely open to that.”

The two are 1-1 in matches.  In their first fight at UFC on FOX 29 in April 2018, Poirier defeated Gaethje by TKO early in the fourth round.  The rematch at UFC 291 ended early in the second with Gaethje knocking out Poirier via head kick.

Former champion Charles Oliveira is next in line for a shot at champion Islam Makhachev.  He was scheduled to face Makhachev in a rematch at UFC 294 but was forced out of the bout due to a nasty cut.  Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski stepped up on short notice and lost via knockout.  Gaethje has to wait in line for his title fight.  If he wants to take a fight before fighting for the title, Poirier is willing.
